Training your Australian Shepherd
The endless Possibilities
Australian Shepherds are extremely intelligent dogs and very eager to please their owners. Because of this they are quick to learn and easily trained. No one wants to discipline and correct their new puppy, they would much rather spoil and love them. Just remember training your puppy to be well behaved, socialized, and obedient will make for a dog you can have a much better relationship with down the road. The more time you put in the more you will get out of your companion and the closer you two will grow.
Starting off your young puppy will not understand the world, what you expect, and why you keep yelling out all these strange words. It’s your job to teach them what is right or wrong, what to do and when to do it. You could tell your puppy to sit until you’re blue in the face, but if you don’t shape that command you’re just wasting your time.
Being such an intelligent breed Australian Shepherds respond much better to positive reinforcement and poorly to harsh punishments. Another dog breed may forgive and forget, where an Aussie will remember and maybe even hold a grudge. That’s not to say punishments will not be required from time to time, as with children they will get into trouble at times.
These dogs are extremely intelligent; We had a 6 week old puppy that could sit, lay down, roll over, shake, and high five. The possibilities are only limited by the time you put into your training.
